What is Austin Like?

Austin is the fourth largest city in Texas and the metro area was home over 1.6 million people in 2008.  Austin is expected to continue to grow as it has one of the strongest economies in the country.

Austin’s economy has become fairly diverse over time.  Being the home of the University of Texas and the state government, the Austin area has almost always had a steady stream of people coming to town and spending money here.  Austin is also home to a lot of high tech companies.  Dell is headquartered in Round Rock, one of Austin’s northern suburbs.  Samsung built its largest U.S. manufacturing facility in Austin in 2007.  Other major Austin employers are the Austin Independent School District, the Seaton Health Care Network, AT&T, Travis County and the IRS.

View from Mt. Bonnell overlooking Lake AustinAustin is at the line that divides flat land to the east and the Central Texas Hill Country to the west.  Parts of Austin are very dramatic to look at.  Just northwest of downtown Austin is Mt. Bonnell.  Mt. Bonnell tops out at 785 above sea level.  What makes it so dramatic is the fact that the top of Mt. Bonnell looks down on Lake Austin, which is about 300 feet below.   So unlike other large Texas cities, Austin has dramatic hills and beautiful lakes.  In addition to the photo from Mt. Bonnell, I have created an Austin Photo Tour page to help people unfamiliar with the area learn about it.

The weather in Austin is typified by long, hot summers and short, cool winters.  We are far enough inland from the coast so hurricanes aren’t as destructive as they are in other parts of the state.  We are far enough south so that snow and ice are rarities, but that can happen.  The Austin area averages around 32 inches of rain each year and has close to 300 sunny days on average.

See a list of things that make Austin so great.
