Austin recreation? There is so much to do in and around Austin you just won't believe it. Whether you are an indoor person, an outdoor person or both, you will never be bored here.
How about being the Live Music Capital of the World? Have you heard that one before? Just cruise down 6th street on any weekend night with your windows down. You will hear more live music than you can believe. Of course, Austin is also home to South by Southwest (SXSW). Since 1987, SXSW has been one of the premier internationally recognized music and media conferences and festivals in the world. Austin has also been home to the very famous Austin City Limits since 1976.
You want restaurants, museums, art galleries, theater, comedy clubs? We've got them. If you are here over a weekend and don't take in a show at Esther's Follies , you will regret it. You'll laugh until you hurt, then you'll laugh some more. Want a great place to relax and reflect? How about the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum ?
Let's talk geology for a minute. Austin is at border of the fertile plains and the Texas Hill Country. We also have a series of lakes running through town and west of town that will take your breath away. The hills in the western Austin area are one reason Lance Armstrong chooses to live here. On any given weekend, you will see dozens and dozens of people riding the hills.
Because of the unique geology of the Hill Country, we have some great nature preserves, caves and parks. Take Hamilton Pool Preserve for instance. The pool and grotto were created when the roof of a cave collapsed due to erosion. Now there is an 80 foot waterfall plunging into the scenic pool. Look at the photo to the right. The stream flowing out of Hamilton Pool winds through a valley lined with huge cypress trees. Hamilton pool offers some very interesting geology and has its own little micro-climate thanks to the water. Want to check out another amazing swimming hole? Visit Krause Springs.
What else is there to do outside? Do you like walking, running or biking? The 10 mile Town Lake Hike & Bike Trail is a downtown area favorite. For a bit more adventure, try the Barton Creek Greenbelt Hike and Bike Trail . There is so much more, all I can do is invite you to look for other fun things to do in Austin .
Do you like the water? then you will have to check out Lake Travis. This gem of a lake winds 63 miles through the Texas Hill Country and is truly spectacular. With its clear water, spectacular cliffs and private coves, Lake Travis is a great place to sail, swim, scuba dive and a lot more.
Want something fun to do with the kids? I also know of a relatively unknown area where you can take your kids to walk in dinosaur tracks, but you'll have to ask me where it is!
