Pedernales Falls State Park is a park where the Pedernales River has a pretty good elevation drop, creating a series of waterfalls and rapids, lots of rocks to scramble over, a number of sand and gravel bars, hiking trails, camping areas and a swimming and wading area The park is around 45 minutes west of Austin or 90 minutes north of San Antonio. Click here for a map to the park. The Pedernales River, pronounced Per-da-nal-us by locals, is a beautiful river that runs through the Central Texas Hill Country into Lake Travis. The area that drains into the river is mostly limestone with just small amounts of topsoil. Consequently, the Pedernales river, like most rivers and creeks in the area, is very clear and takes on a blue-green appearance. One thing to be very aware of if you visit the park is the weather. If there is even a slight chance of heavy rain upstream, avoid the park. Flash flooding can occur in just minutes even if no rain is in the immediate area. The river can come up 20 feet in very little time. If you visit the park, check the weather, take good walking shoes, plenty of sunscreen and water and a camera. After the photo section will be a few videos. I can't claim to be a great cinematographer, but perhaps the videos will give you a good perspective of the falls.
