Round Rock, once a small town, is now a large city on the northern border of Austin. Home to over 60,000 people in 2006, Round Rock was transformed with Dell Computer opened it's headquarters there. Round Rock was named after a round rock in the San Gabriel River that marked a safe crossing for early pioneers.
As homes in much of the Austin area have become more expensive, developers and home builders put togther many relativ ely inexpensive neighborhoods in Round Rock. This has made the city the largest bedroom community to Austin.
Round Rock has also diversified over time. It is now home notly to Dell, but to hospitals by St. David's and Scott & White, the Round Rock Premium Outlets, which is filled with stores and shops, and the only Ikea in the Austin area. Austin Community College also has a large campus in eastern Round Rock.
