The Highland Lakes located in the Central Texas Hill Country were initially built to control flooding. Now the seven Highland Lakes make a beautiful series of lakes winding through the Hill Country. The lakes, from west to east, are Lake Buchanan, Lake LBJ, Inks Lake, Lake Marble Falls, Lake Travis and Lake Austin. Lady Bird Lake, which was formerly called Town Lake, is not part of the Highland Lakes, but is the last lake in the immediate chain of lakes. The lakes, which were created in the 1930s and 1940s now offer prime real estate, awesome recreation, hydroelectric power and irrigation.
The lakes begin in Llano/Burnet Counties and travel the Texas Hill Country all the way to Austin. They are managed by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) for the State of Texas. The Highland Lakes are known for thier beauty, peacefulness and excellent boating and fishing.
With great weather most of the time, golf course all over the place and a variety or marinas, you could stay a week, play golf on a different course everyday and still h ave not played all of the courses. You could spend 3 days on a boat on Lake Travis and still not see everything.
There is so much to do and see that if you come visit for a weekend, you will be hooked for a lifetime!
There are many communities to choose from along the Highland Lakes including Marble Falls, Horseshoe Bay, Kingsland, Granite Shoals, Burnet, and Spicewood, Lakeway, Jonestown, Point Venture and Lago Vista. Austin is approximately 45 miles east and San Antonio is about 90 miles south of Marble Falls.
Another thing we have besides the great lake activities is a good number of Texas wineries. That isn't something that many people would expect to find in Central Texas.
