Jobless Rate In Austin Continues to Drop
The job market in Austin continues to be extremely strong. Although job growth has dropped from 4% in October, 2005 to 2.6% now, the unemployment rate has dropped to 3.7%. That is pretty incredible. Austin’s jobless rate is much lower than the entire state, which has a jobless rate of 4.4%. The job market is so strong here, some employers are offering bonuses.
One area that concerns me is practically in my back yard – Bee Cave. With the Shops at the Galleria open and the Hill Country Galleria Mall going up, I don’t know where new employees will come from. This area doesn’t have much of a population of potential retail employees. It isn’t an area of affordable rent either. With the unemployment in Austin so low, I have a feeling that store owners and managers will be forced to pay people pretty well in order to get them here.
