In my opinion, part of living in a community is giving back.  I give back to my community in a variety or ways.  Relay For Life is one of those ways.  Relay For Life is an event that brings a community together for a common cause.  We hold Relay for three main reasons.  First, to honor cancer survivors, their families and caregivers.  Second, to promote awareness of and educate people about cancer.  Third, to raise money to research a cure.

The 2007 event will be my 5th Relay For Life at Lake Travis.  I have chaired the event twice and I'll do it again this year.  This is a huge event, not just at Lake Travis but everywhere.  Our little event honored 55 survivors, had 550 participants and raised almost $67,000.  The 24 county area that makes up the American Cancer Society High Plains division had 47 events, honored over 4300 survivors, had 32,500 participants and raised $3.2 million.

If you look nationally at Relay For Life events, they will be held in around 5,000 locations.  The events are almost entirely volunteer driven.  Each event has a planning committee made of of people from the community and just one staff partner from the American Cancer Society.

Everyone knows someone who has been touched by cancer.  It might have been a family member or a friend, but was somebody.  If this speaks to you, get involved.  Click the banner to be taken to a page where you can find out about Relay's in your community.
