High School Football in Austin
Anyone who knows anything about Texas and football knows that high school football is huge in this state. When anyone who knows Austin thinks of state championship games, they usually think about Westlake. Well, not this year.
This year the Austin area has three teams in state championship games. Liberty Hill was back for the second year in a row last weekend, winning the state 3A Division I title game. Pflugerville is playing Katy tomorrow in the championship in the 5A Division II game. With a 3-loss season, I don't think a lot of people would have predicted Pflugerville would be in the state championship game, but they are playing in the Alamodome tomorrow.
Perhaps the biggest surprise if you asked anyone at the beginning of the year is Lake Travis. The Cavaliers, behind the arm of QB Garret Gilbert and the rushing of Chris Aydam, will be playing for the 4A Division II The Cavs this year have lost just one game and that was to 5A always strong Westlake. That was the first game of the season and the Cavs have looked great ever since. Gilbert is only a junior this year and he is already one of the best quarterbacks in the state, having thrown for almost 50 touchdowns this year. Aydam, a 1000 yard rusher, is also a junior. Watch out for these guys next year as seniors.
Lake Travis plays powerhouse Highland Park tomorrow at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco. Both teams are offensive scoring machines. Lake Travis does more through the air and Highland Parks keeps the ball more on the ground. For the 30,000 fans expected to be in attendance, this should be a great game.
Congratulations to the players, coaches, students and faculties at all three schools.
So it is mid-July, 2008 now and the 2008/2009 school year is rapidly approaching. How will LT do this year? I don't know, but one thing I can tell you is that there have been families moving into the LTISD so their kids can play football here. Sounds a bit much, but it is true. The same thing happened all the times at Westlake High School when their team was a perennial powerhouse. If you're looking for a Lake Travis home, contact me at 512-263-9090.
Update: We're toward the end of August, 2010 and I just looked back at how may views this post has gotten - it has been viewed over 20,000 times! I guess people really do love high school football in Texas.
Update in December, 2011 - Lake Travis is playing for its 5th consecutive state championship tomorrow in Texas Stadium and they are the favorite. Five in a row has never been done before in Texas, but it looks like a good bet for tomorrow.
