Not-So-Well-Known Things To Do In Austin
If you have been in Austin for any length of time (or even done a few Internet searches), you have figured out some of the standard things to do in Austin. Once you have toured the Capitol, seen the bats, and strolled down Sixth, what can you do?
Taking a ghost tour in downtown is a unique way to get a scare or just learn some unique parts of local history. It can make for a great date or just give you a new perspective on some parts of town you thought you knew.
Depending on which tour you take, you will see different things. On the Warehouse District tour, you will hear about some of the city’s most mysterious murders. If you take the Capitol tour, you’ll learn about how Colonel Driskill still keeps an eye on his hotel. If you take Pub Crawl tour, the story of the servant girl killer won’t be so bad since you can have a drink after you hear it.
Tickets are 20 dollars and the tours run most Fridays and Saturdays. Tours run rain or shine so check the weather before you book your tickets. Dress comfortably because it is a walking tour.
A Round Rock Express game isn’t technically in Austin, but it is worth the drive. This minor league baseball team can get you more entertainment than a night at the movies for a much lower price. Dollar hot dog and soda night on Mondays and half price beer on Thursdays means you can spend a night out for under ten dollars.
You can have a great time even if you don’t love baseball. Beyond the right field wall is a swimming pool, hot tub, and covered picnic area. The stadium also includes a basketball court and a 26-foot high simulated rock wall.
Obviously, game schedules vary every season so head to the homepage and learn when you can
My personal favorite is The Cathedral of Junk. It is exactly what it sounds like. It isn’t just piles of junk in a backyard. It is three stories of junk that are sturdy enough to climb. The city inspectors have tried to find a weak spot, but they can’t seem to do it.
It has been a three year labor of love for its creator, Vince Hannemann. The Cathedral has hosted weddings, CD debut parties, and bachelor parties. You can even bring your own junk to donate to the Cathedral.
There aren’t regular operating hours, you just give Vince a call (512-299-7413) and ask if he is available for a tour. Even if you don’t bring junk for him, please bring a donation for his time.
