Lake Travis Cavalier Football Team - Champs Again?
Anyone following high school football in Central Texas knows about the Lake Travis Cavaliers. This is a football team that didn't win a game in 2002 that has transformed in one of the most dominant teams in the country. The Cavs are on a 45 game winning streak and will play Longview in an attempt to take home the 4A state championship for the third year in a row.
I was with friends at the Homecoming game this year along with probably 8,000 other fans in a stadium with a capacity of 6,000 this year. The team looked every bit as good, if not better, than last year's team. Last year's team had Garrett Gilbert at quarterback. Gilbert is the likely successor to Colt McCoy at UT Austin next year. Gilbert passed for almost 13,000 yards in high school. People wondered whether this year's LT quarterback, Michael Brewer, could fill Gilbert's shoes. Brewer did all right last Saturday. Playing at Kyle Field at Texas A&M against Pearland Dawson, Gilbert threw for 4 touchdowns and ran for 2 more. He has over 4,000 passing yards this year.
Just how good is this Lake Travis football team? Rivals has them ranked #2 in the nation and states: "The Cavaliers are the only team still playing who can challenge Don Bosco for No. 1." The Cavs played 5A powerhouse Westlake H.S. in the third game of this season. They won that game 42-21. Why is that worth mentioning? Westlake is playing for the 5A state championship on Saturday.
So how have the Cavs become so good? It started with great coaching. Jeff Dicus came to Lake Travis in 2003 and had a 3-7 season. The next 3 years the team went 11-1, 8-3 and 15-1. The 15-1 season was 2007 when the Cavs won their first state championship. Dicus left and was replaced by Chad Morris, who has taken the team 16-0 so far this season. Sounds like something a pro team would envy. The Cavs also have training facilities that rival some college programs. Check out the Activity Center and weight room at Lake Travis High School.
The Cavs beat Pearland Dawson last Saturday 57-12. They beat Longivew for the championship last year 48-23, but Longview was not as strong looking as they are this year. If Lake Travis plays like they did last week, they could take Longview by a score very similar to last year. In any case, I think we're looking at a three-peat.
