U.S. News & World Report ranked three Austin area high schools among the best in the country.  Lake Travis, Westlake and Westwood High Schools were all recognized as silver medal schools.  This puts them as among the top 516 schools in the country in terms of a College Readiness Index, but not in the top 100.

The study analyzed almost 22,000 high schools in 48 states and Washington D.C.  The study looked at all students to see if they were performing higher statistically on tests than the average student in the state starting with reading and math.  It also looked at disadvantaged students to see if they were performing higher statistically than the average student in the state for all disadvantaged students.

The study also looked at Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate test data to rate schools as preparing the students best for college.  Of the 3 local schools recognized, only Westwood has an International Baccalaureate program.  The study placed Lake Travis, Westlake and Westwood High Schools in the top .44% to 2.2% range of all schools rated, but did not give a rank for each.

These schools are a reason that much of the areas feeding kids into the schools have higher real estate prices and are desirable for home buyers.
