When Was the Last Time Austin Got Snow?

And why would I even ask this question?  Because the forecast calls for a 70% chance for snow this Friday!

The last snow that actually hung around Austin for a while was on Valentine's Day in 2004.  Check out the following photo from that day.

Will we be able to do this on Friday?  It looks like we have a good chance for it.  If we do get snow, it may be cold enough for it to cover the grass and shrubs, but the roads will probably not ice over until well after dark when the temperature plunges.  If the roads are wet and the temperature does plunge, we may need to watch for ice on bridges and overpasses.

So if we get snow on Friday, be careful, especially Friday night.

Update on 12-04-2009.  The little snowman in the photo above has, at my daughter's reequest, been in my freezer until this morning.  When I woke today the tmperature was 22 degrees.  So I took the little snowman out of the freezer and placed it out in the yard close to where it was 5 years ago.  Now it can melt, evaporate and join its big brother.

The City of Austin is not recommending any facility closures, nor does it anticipate any road closures or weather-related public safety activations. Public safety, public works, aviation and utility personnel are on stand-by and prepared for action should conditions change suddenly.
